Kudos for being able to play the piano parts so well on that keyboard. good playing. I use a cp88 to control my modx for playing piano. i just couldnt do what you do on that. nice job.
How do you get the downloaded performances loaded on to the modx keyboard. Sweet video
This is awesome and thank you. Covers what needs to be covered. Goes in depth when required and absolutely no fluff. You are the model that all others should follow on UA-cam Papa D
Any chance you have the tabs for this? Or for Cry Out your Sadness? Walter Wanderley is a big inspiration for me but I can't seem to find any tutorials on his songs
What keyboard sound is this?
3 years later and still very good. I use the original MODX7 and a Korg Wavestate on stage now. Pretty hard to beat. By the way, I take advantage of the keyboard being restricted to the first 8 parts, and sometimes have the Wavestate also playing one of the channels on the MODX (I choose CH12 because it leaves 4 consecutive channels above when I want to also integrate my Novation Circuit or Digitone. Another fact some people may not know, is that if you have any voice on one of the upper channels (9-16) switched on and use the zone settings, it still midi sends a program change when you change patches. Very effective controller. I only have to select one entry from the live set, and it changes all other devices on different midi channels instantly.
So cool👍Can you share the backing track???
many many moons ago, I purchased a songbook called "Real Fake book", where they used all sorts of substitute chords to standard songs, and it is amazing how subtle it can be to improve the sound of various songs. Learning all the possible variations of voicings of chords is a lifetime art that keeps us busy! You have done a masterful job here!
can you please share the backup
Wonder to my ears.
Hi Dennis! Just happened to hit yr UA-cam videos & I'm mersmerized by yr keyboard skills!! Expected this from a much younger player, but wow! You've become my idol, my man!! I'm currently 63, going to 64 - an intermediate keyboard player, but truly inspired by yr repertoire of oldies in all your videos. Hv a few Qs, which I hope you can answer me in selecting a suitable synthesizer to augment my Yamaha Clavinova CVP. 1st: Notice you switched from a Yamaha Modx 7 to now a Roland Fantom. Any reason why? Q2: Where do you get yr drum rhythms for yr songs? Did you program yr own drum patterns or you import from some website or source? I'll be following yr videos closely, my man!! Keep on Rocking!!👋👋🙌
Awesome!
Bravo! You are awesome! I love it!
Fantastic welcome me to the family. Fantastic welcome me to the family. I need to leave my software loaning dig into this phantom. I need to leave my software loaning dig into this phantom.
j'en apprends tout les jours de se que l'on peut faire avec le MODX, à quoi ça sert d'avoir un arrangeur puisque le modx le fait!?
How do i find this? Today. Is it under Montage?
Trip of a lifetime, thank you for sharing it with us. Incredible.
Well done Dennis!
Hi Dennis, I am a new subscriber and am really enjoying your very helpful videos. I have a Fantom 7, but never had a MODX. Comparing these 2 boards, have you switched over to or prefer the Fantom?
Hi Carl. Thanks for subscribing. The Fantom 7 is roughly twice the price of the MODX 7 keyboard, so it's not exactly a fair comparison. I had a MODX 7 for about 5 years but sold it to move up to the Fantom 7. For the money the MODX is quite good, but the keybed had a cheap feel. I love the keybed on the Fantom 7. Piano sounds and electric piano sounds are excellent on both keyboards, but the Fantom's tone wheel organ is much better than the MODX's organ sounds (IMO!). In the synthesizer department the Fantom blows away the MODX. I could go on, but you get the idea. It's like comparing a mid-range Ford (MODX) to a higher end BMW (Fantom). You get what you pay for!
Great song
Brilliant Dennis! What effects (e.g. delay) are you using on the different sounds?
I always add some reverb to my tones and scenes, and occasionally delay. As I discuss in this video, I also use chorus effects sometimes. Other than those basic effects, not much else. I probably need to explore effects in the board more. I think there are roughly 90 effects to choose from, and most of them are quite good.
How can I install this in my MODX
Did you ever find it? Just starting to look myself
I always enjoy your playing Dennis! I’m just now getting into the MODX rhythm arpeggios. Lot’s of fun!
following this after #27 tanks alot Dennis
Love the Anita Baker chords in the intro
jazzy I see those virtual drawbars 3 out and the others less so.. just curious if that is one of the reasons I used to see a MODX and now its a Fantom?
I sold my MODX after having it about 5 years because I was ready to move up to a better keyboard. As I mention in my response to Carl above, the MODX is an excellent keyboard for the money. The Fantom is roughly twice the price, and I feel it was worth upgrading to. I'm very happy with it. As for the drawbars, the Fantom's tone wheel organ sounds much better than any of the organ sounds on the MODX (IMO), and I like the sound of drawbars 1, 2, and 3 extended with the other drawbars not extended. That's a fairly common drawbar registration for a jazz sound.
What is best keyboard overall?
Hey Razeu. Impossible to say! My previous keyboard was a Yamaha MODX and it was excellent. I sold it because a) I had had it for about 5 years and I was itching for a change, and b) I was never crazy about the key bed feel. The Roland Fantom synth action (on the 62 and 76 key models) is excellent, IMO. Some years ago I had a Nord Stage 2 and it was also an excellent keyboard. The current Nord Stage 4 is a great keyboard but very expensive. I can't really answer your question because "best overall" is subjective, meaning we all have different ideas of what sounds and features we like. Your budget is another obvious factor that would determine what keyboard you might buy.
Hi Dennis, very abrupt edit at 9:30 mins. Dunno if you intended this as you missed out zone 5 explanation. Enjoyed the playing and tutorial very much, thanks.
Hey Sunlight. Yes, that was very sloppy editing on my part. I'll be more careful in the future. Cheers!
tHANKS. STILL LEARNING THE KEYBOARD AFTER 2 YEARS!>
The percussion on off thing was helpful. Thanks!
Hola buenas. Donde puedo adquirir este paquete....
Thank you for sharing your videos. You're a very skilled and talented player. Love to listen to you.
Very nice Dennis - is that a bass backing track or arpeggio generated by chord recognition on the Fantom (on the first track) ? Happy Holidays!
Hi Dave. Backing tracks only. I make them with Logic Pro. Nothing fancy. Happy Holidays to you too!
Dennis, I'm assuming that these would work for the ModX+ too?
Yes absolutely, i just loaded these in2 my MODX6+
wow! an actual INTELLIGENT and INSTRUCTIVE music theory lesson, showing the application in REAL songs: instead of the usual flashy multitimbral hodgepodges of pad sounds that are certainly big and flashy, but do not exist in the real world of standard tunes.
Beautiful.
Hi is there a way the the Yamaha Motif sweet flute sound can be created on the roland Fantom? I was trying to find the voices on the Motif rack that make up that Patch.
I haven't found a good flute sound on the Fantom, but it's not really something I would use much. Good luck finding one!
@@tkrdennis thanks for your response back.😃
Sound is weird on 3 and 4 on mine, can someone help me if knows how to fix it, please🙏
Thank you for sharing your multitimbral FM patches! I put them into my Fantom and they sound great. **The only tone I couldn't find was the "Tine MK 1 Trem 1" which I think is from an expansion pack. But there were a few suitable alternatives within my Fantom. Thanks again!
Hi David. Sorry for the delay. I don't spend a lot of time monitoring my UA-cam channel these days. Yes, the Tine MK1 Trem 1 Tone came from an expansion pack. Roland offers quite a few free expansion packs and I have installed many of them in my Fantom. I also recently purchased and installed the major EX upgrade package ($199 U.S.), and I may do a future video on it. Even with that installed plus numerous expansions, I still have quite a bit of free memory available in the keyboard. I feel that Roland gave us a nice amount of user memory in the board.
@@tkrdennis Thanks for responding. I also added the EX upgrade and have really enjoyed the German Piano and some of the JD800 presets--especially "Crystal EPs.'
That arrangement is beautiful., so soulful! I have the Fantom 7 do you feel the action is a little loud? I have been thinking about getting the 8 instead. Anyway, I am going to sub to your channel, I love the style of music you play... right up my street!
Thanks Echo. I love the action of the Fantom 7. It’s a little noisy but i find it very playable. Thanks for the kind words.
Great videos. If you had 2 of the foot controllers, can you connect 1 into input 1 and hav it as mod, and the other input2 and have it controlling the super knob..??
Your patches are so dreamy!!! I’m going to have to copy some of these on my Fantom!!!
One thing I neglected to mention in the video is that I have installed quite a few extra sounds into my Fantom. I installed mostly the free ones offered by Roland. Some of the Tones I discuss in the video are extra sounds downloaded from Roland.
Thanks for the video, great playing and voicings! Can you share your lead sheet, please?
Thanks Anton. The only lead sheet I have is the one I display on screen in the video.
Lovely playing. Its so good watching and hearing you play the MODX. I have the same synth but im a beginner.
I didnt realise Roland had FM synthesis. Sound good.❤ I have a MODX by the way
No! The Fantom doesn’t have FM synthesis. The FM piano sounds are all sampled sounds. But they are very good.
fantom does have FM synthesis ! i believe its called XMOD2 (or XMOD1) in the Zencore engine. But its only one carrier and one modulator (2 Operators) , but you can use like any waveform ! and stack a whole lotta 2 OPerators :3@@tkrdennis
I guess I was wrong! Thanks Don Leino. I’ll check it out.
your welcome enjoy@@tkrdennis
👌
This is great. Thanks for the video! Beautiful sounds (and arrangement on that song)
Thank you very much!
Thanks.
Merci 🙏
Avec plaisir!
Thanks for walking us through the chord progressions! Great tips.
